State Cryptids: The Mogollon Monster
In the dense forest of the Mogollon Rim in Arizona, a local legend lurks. It’s 7 to 10 feet tall, hairy, strong, and smelly. It’s Arizona’s very own Bigfoot called the Mogollon Monster.
Though accounts vary on appearance, it’s said the Mogollon monster is covered in thick brown or reddish hair everywhere but on its face.
According to another account — “A man known only as I. W. Stevens told The Arizona Republic he saw a “humanoid creature with long white hair and matted beard that reached to its knees.” The monster allegedly did not have on any clothing and possessed at least two-inch-long claws on its talon-like fingers.” — Katie Lawrence
Its long legs move it quickly over the Arizona terrain leaving behind footprints up to 22 inches long.
Although it’s called the Mogollon Monster, it’s believed it was first sighted in the Grand Canyon in 1903. This creature has roamed the area for over a century.
As a warning, or for fun, it’s been known to frighten witnesses by screaming into the night. Its scream is loud and unlike any other known wildlife in the area.
It’s also said that the Mogollon Monster is predatory and may carry a club to hunt.
